Dave Grohl is making plans for a true solo project — a 25-minute instrumental song on which he will play all the instruments himself.

Though he was the sole performer on Foo Fighters debut album, this one is shaping up a little different.

"I have a studio, EastWest in LA, where I'm going to set up an expanse of instruments,” Madison.com reports. “Several drum kits, a load of guitars, bass, rhythm and lead. I'll hit play and the clock will start ticking. I will record the first drum part, then I will run to the next drum set and play another drum part that will record over the first. Then I will do the same with all the guitars, all assigned to a different moment in the instrumental.”

Of course, Grohl, who has become something of an auteur with his documentary film Sound City and the HBO series Sonic Highways, will be filming the entire session.

"[W]e'll film everything with multiple cameras,” he explains, “so by the end of it you will see and hear one song being played for 25 minutes, with six different Dave Grohls playing every note, on every single instrument, all the way through in one take.”

Whether fans will ever hear the song is up to Grohl, an outgrowth of the creative freedom he feels at this point in his career.

“'If I want to write a 25-minute instrumental, write all the music, play all the instruments, film it and then, guess what, maybe never even release it? I'll do it. Just because I can,” he says.

The Foo Fighters recently wrapped up dates in North America behind their most recent album, Concrete and Gold, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart; the next leg of the tour kicks off June 1-3 at the Rock Am Ring Festival in Nuremberg, Germany. Grohl last appeared in Oakland, at a benefit for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, and was joined onstage by his daughters Violet (to play Adele’s “When We Were Young”) and Harper (on the Foo Fighters’ “The Sky Is a Neighborhood” and Queen’s “We Will Rock You”).
