This is footage of rioting that inspired the edict in question.

The City of East Lansing’s 1999 rule which makes it illegal to be close to a fire without attempting to put it out or contact emergency personnel is unconstitutional, according to a District Court Judge’s ruling last week. The ruling came when the judge also tossed out charges against two women charged with violating the fire ordinance last Fall.

The decree was made in an effort to squash the arson-laced exhibitions in the streets of East Lansing, which tend to come after both big wins and losses by MSU’s football and basketball teams.

Not clear yet if the city will appeal the ruling or tweak the ordinance.
