The Detroit Free Press reports that Bell's Brewery is no longer Michigan's largest brewery. But, Bell's officials still contend they are the king of the state.

Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids is reported to have produced 466,700 barrels of beer in 2017, while Bell's Brewing Company in Kalamazoo produced 464,000 barrels.

However, Bell's brass contends that since Founders sold a 30 percent of its company to Mahou San Miguel, a Spanish based company in 2014, that Founders is no longer considered a craft brewery. Bell's Brewing Company remains an independent brewery.

But, the sales numbers for both rival breweries are staggering. Those numbers support the claims of those that consider either the best breweries in the United States.
