Twice annually, the Michigan DNR offers residents and non-residents alike, the chance to go out and fish without purchasing a license. Size and species, size and catch limits do apply!

A novel idea to be sure, but here is where I come in with a bit of caution and common sense. Most of Michigan has seen a very mild winter with fluctuating temperatures causing ice conditions, especially around the edges, become very unsafe. Sure, some seasoned anglers will tell you that the thicker ice will be out from the shore and even some will make a bridge to cross those edges. In my opinion, it's not worth it! I love bluegill and perch on a plate as much as the next guy, but I also prefer to be at the top of the food chain.

Even some of the rivers may be a bit higher and faster with soft banks that could pose some slippery conditions.

So if you're thinking about getting out for some free fishing fun, you may want to drive a bit north of M-57 and get with some of the local bait & tackle shops for a full local report. And NEVER GO ALONE!!!
