Drivers in Lansing will see a few minutes shaved off their time heading north to Mount Pleasant or Mackinac with the speed increase.

Good news, your trips to Soaring Eagle just got a little bit quicker.

US-127 between Lansing (past the I-69 interchange) and the I-75 interchange (north of Houghton Lake) has had its speed limit increased to 75 miles per hour except for a roughly 15 mile stretch between St. John’s and Ithaca where it remains 65 miles per hour.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has started rolling out new speed limit signs that raise the speed limit from 70 to 75 miles per hour on some major freeways, and other non-major freeways have been increased from 55 to 65 miles per hour. This project was approved by State officials back in January and work on this installing the signs started over the weekend.

There’s another speed increase coming to the Lansing area. I-69 and 69-business (Saginaw) to Swartz Creek going through Clinton, Shiawassee, and Genesee has been raised to 75 miles per hour.

State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle speaking with the media when the speed changes were announced:

“The corridors identified by MDOT and MSP were selected not only because studies indicated most drivers were already driving at those increased speeds, but also because their design and safety features were best suited to these speed limits”

Here’s the full map of roads that are getting new signs.

All told about 1,500 miles of road in Michigan will see speed increases when all the new signage is done some time this summer.
