WILX.com reports that the Ingham County Sheriff  Department is warning residents of a new phone scam where callers imitate department personnel and coax residents into making payments by phone.

According to the report, a scammer claims to be a captain on the sheriff's posse and tells the target that they have a friend or loved one lodged in the county jail. Then the scammer asks for money to resolve the matter.

Officials say that nobody at ICSD would ask for unsolicited payment over the phone from anybody. If you receive one of these calls, do not provide any personal or banking information, and do not call the number back.

Residents who receive one of these calls should report it immediately to local law enforcement. For full details, visit this link to WILX.com.
