On April 21, John Mellencamp will release his 23rd album, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies. He announced the news today along with a five-week tour of the U.S.

He'll begin on June 5 at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village, Colo., and conclude on July 11 at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, N.Y., with a handful of fair dates in August and September. He'll be joined by Carlene Carter, who is featured prominently on the new record. Opening up on most days will be country legend Emmylou Harris, although Jewel will fill in for her during the two shows in Oregon, and Lily & Madeleine, a folk-pop sister duo from Indianapolis.

You can see all the dates below and get full details about ticketing, including pre-sale information and VIP packages, at his website. All who purchase tickets will receive a CD copy of Sad Clowns & Hillbillies, which a press release we received says "returns Mellencamp to the musical eclecticism that is, itself, a reflection of his wide-ranging musings on life. Sad Clowns & Hillbillies showcases a poet who has wisely used the years between youth and the present day to become an absolute master of songwriting and interpretation. That passion and experience resonates most beautifully in this showcase of his music."

Last month, Mellencamp released a song called "Easy Target," which he called a “reflection on the state of our country.” It's unknown as of now if the song will be included on Sad Clowns & Hillbillies.
