Kirk Cousins and Washington Redskins Reportedly End Contract Negotiations

Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins have hit an impasse in contract talks, according to ESPN.

The two sides broke off negotiations on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter. No further negotiations are scheduled either.

Cousins, a 27-year-old Michigan State alum, his coming off his fourth and best season as a pro. He completed 69.8 percent of his passes for 4,166 yards, 29 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions while leading Washington to an NFC east title.

Franchise quarterbacks routinely get long-term deals worth about $20 million per year.

Washington could still use its franchise tag to retain Cousins for one year. ESPN estimates that would cost about $20 million, too.

Washington is expected to release the quarterback Cousins supplanted, Robert Griffin III, this offseason as well.

Other teams in need of a franchise quarterback--or could be in need soon--that could be potential suitors for Cousins if he leaves the nation's capital include: Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, the Jets, New Orleans, Philadelphia, San Francisco and St. Louis.
