A dear friend of mine had an extra seat at their table for the "Lansing Promise Dinner" last night, which was held on the floor of the Breslin Center, on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing. What an honor to be part of such a positive event!

That was the fourth "Lansing Promise Dinner", which celebrates and promotes the program that awards 65 credits of tuition assistance to eligible students from Lansing High Schools. The purpose of "Lansing Promise" is, very simply, to give the opportunity of a higher education to kids who wouldn't otherwise be able to pursue that dream.

Each year, there is a surprise speaker at the "Lansing Promise Dinner"; Magic Johnson was the guest speaker the first year.

Last night, the surprise was Michigan State University Football coach Mark Dantonio and 18 members of the football team. The Coach and the players have been involved with "Lansing Promise" by visiting Lansing schools, hosting students at Spartan stadium and putting students in contact with MSU Admissions representatives.

So many local businesses, foundations and organizations come together to build a stronger, healthier community and I'm grateful to all who make this a priority. The money raised last night at the Breslin Center event will, of course, fund the "Lansing Promise" program.

Of course I had to try to get a picture. In the dark (see above). Here are some better pics I took on my way out:
