Retailers betting on swimsuit season in Michigan is about as safe as buying stock for the upcoming ice fishing season. With Upper Peninsula retailers taking a bigger risk than the troll shops.

For some, the smallest of bikini's can tote a hefty tag! That's why I say we look back to a simpler time in America's history when the swimsuit knew no real gender. A basic cut for both men and women was standard. Neither was subject to higher costs because the material and basic design was universal. Your only real option was color and if Henry Ford had his way, that would only be black.

So the next time you are out shopping for the right one or two piece bikini or perfect Speedo, give a little thought to how easy things were in the 1920's. Form, function and warmth for those summers that don't start until August. It will also give you a greater appreciation for what our grandparents and great grandparents had to endure.
