With the news that The U.S. Department of Interior denied a request by The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians to move Downtown Lansing acreage into trust in effort to build a casino, the question is, "What's next?"

The tribe and Mayor Virg Bernero plan to keep the fight going. However, Bernero will not be Lansing's mayor as of January 1, 2018. So, will his successor follow Bernero's suit?

WILX asked that question to four mayoral candidates. One candidate has changed his outlook on the proposed project completely over the last five years. Two candidates seem awfully wishy-washy on the topic, obviously so as to not upset any voters on either side. And, the other candidate that was approached seems to be in support, even after some admittance that he was deceived about the potential of local job growth.
