Old license plates are part of the latest objects to be repurposed in the DIY craze. Folks are making everything from bird houses to maps of Michigan.

It's truly nothing new, but you could very well be cutting up money and not know it! Some license plates command big money and collectors are willing to pay.

Early license plates were made of leather and are very rare and sought after. Subsequent plates were porcelain, steel and then aluminum. Not all license plates are valuable, but there are exceptions in every category. Vanity plates, limited issues for organizations or the automotive industry bring better than average values. Even discontinued license plates from law enforcement bring good money by collectors. Legal to own as long as they are out of date for their terms of use.

So before you bend or cut that next plate, do a little digging. You may just end up with enough to make a bunch of new projects!
