We have a lot of dining options in the Lansing area. Some have better food than others. Some are cleaner than others. One thing that makes a restaurant succeed is consistency. You must be firing on all cylinders to make it and be profitable.

This article isn't meant to disuade you from eating at any of these locations. I enjoy reading yelp reviews. They are entertaining. I am also a firm believer that sometimes there are good and bad days. If I have a bad experience at a restaurant I will give them a second chance.

Food and service are key factors for me when I go out to eat. The most important thing to me when it comes to eating out is cleanliness. If my shirt sleeves stick to your "clean" table, we've got an issue. If the men's room has leaking toilets and feces on the floor I will walk out.

Sometimes when people leave negative reviews I think that they may have had a bad day and are projecting onto a business that they think "did them wrong". When I have a negative experience at a restaurant I speak with the manager, face to face, one on one. I don't wait to get home and write are negative review while hiding behind the comfort of my keyboard or screen. Who knows who reads those anyways besides you and I?

Samantha P via yelp:

The disappointment was huge. You walk in and it seems like this modern italian bodega. The food, the menu, and the service is terrible. The menu is no clear enough and has typos, the food was horrible, and while we were sitting there, all the tables around us were full of dirty plates.

I ordered their butternut ravioli. The sauce was extremely salty, the ravioli was poorly shaped and too thick. The sauce had pieces of other pasta in it, as if the pan they used to brown the butter was dirty. My husbands food (short rib ragú gnocchi) was under salted and the gnocchi lacked the classic consistency, as if there were made with all purpose flour, as opposed to the 00 flour. I will most certainly not return and I don't recommend anyone to eat here if the expectation is an Italian experience. I would have settled for properly seasoned food.

Mark P about the Burger King on Lake Lansing via yelp:

What a mistake coming here.  It's not just the sloppy burgers or cold fries or flat Coke. Or that they forgot the napkins and the ketchup and the receipt....but when I returned and showed them a picture of the sloppy burger they gave me they became very unfriendly and confrontational about it and then took every second of about 20 minutes to find my receipt. Not only does this place suck but the management has a real chip on its shoulder. I don't often give low reviews but these iceholes deserve it. You suck.

Angie W talks Capital Prime via yelp:

Ohh my goodness how is this place still in business!? The service and ambience inspires quality, but the food is horrible!!! The steak was flavored and cooked perfectly. The bruschetta.was so STALE. They added water to the goat cheese and called it "spread". HORRIBLE!! Do they really think customers don't know better? We will never go back. Whoever manages this place is not qualified. Yuk, yuk, yuk!!!!!!!!  Very pricey for poor quality.

Jason D is not going back to Harper's in EL, via yelp:

What an absolute joke. This place was the most overpriced, disgusting bar I've ever been to. Underage people everywhere, cover charge, expensive drinks, sticky floors, dirty tables, atrocious bathrooms with no stall doors, disgusting area behind the barkeepers. The bathrooms are awful. The men's had no stall doors, puke/blood/urine/feces on the toilet and floor. There was standing water all over the sink and floor, and no paper towel. The only way they're able to stay open is because they allow underage patrons in, so they are forced to spend way more and deal with way worse. Never again will I come this this dirty overpriced crap show.

Richard G didn't enjoy Dagwood's, via yelp:

I have been going to Dagwoods for years and years unfortunately today I had the chili cheese fries and found a piece of metal in it that I was chewing on that was at least 2 inches long hopefully I didn't swallow any I told the waitress that she needed to let the owners know they probably needed to throw out the chili hopefully no other customers will get metal in their chili I will probably not ever go back due to this incident so beware if you get the chili I'm assuming that the piece of metal came from the can opener the waitress I have had problems with before hopefully no other customers will have to go through what I went through today beware when you get to chili.

That's not going to stop me from going and getting the best burger in town.

Lauren C disses Meat in Old Town via yelp:

Narrow minded owners offer no options for others that don't want meat.  I'm almost never in an all-meat group so this just feels so dated and silly.

With all do respect Lauren C, the name of the restaurant is MEAT.

Applebee's on S. Cedar St., Cathy D via yelp:

7 people seated in the bar section at table, no service as our waitress was the bar tender. Even when she wasn't busy, just talking to a cute guy at the bar...we got no service. So, 7 people walked out after 20 min of no service and we won't be back. Too bad for her, we're all good tippers!
