Once seen as the embodiment of all that is unholy in society, Alice Cooper has actually been a devout Christian for many years. In a new interview, he opened up about his faith, but stressed that he is not looking to preach the Gospel.

Speaking to HM: The Hard Music Magazine (as reported by DC Beacon), Cooper says he doesn’t believe in “celebrity Christianity,” because “it’s really easy to focus on Alice Cooper and not on Christ. I’m a rock singer. I’m nothing more than that. I’m not a philosopher. I consider myself low on the totem pole of knowledgeable Christians. So, don’t look for answers from me.”

Having grown up with a father who was a preacher, Cooper has always had religion in his life. But it wasn’t until he quit drinking in the ‘80s that he dedicated his life to Christ, saying that it was “initially more out of the fear of God, rather than the love of God…I did not want to go to Hell.”

However, Cooper’s faith has affected how he prepares his legendary stage show — with older songs that reference promiscuity and substance abuse no longer part of the set — and his new material. “I’m very careful about what the lyrics are,” he continued. “I tried to write songs that were equally as good, only with a better message.”
