According to media reports, including this one from wilx.com, the Astera Credit Union on Jolly Road in South Lansing was robbed today for the second time in a month. This is just the most recent incident of armed robbery in the Lansing Area, and comes on the heels of numerous late summer shootings. The odd part of it all, most of the incidents have been isolated to the southern half of Lansing, where Lansing Police have just set up new shop. Despite the recent spike in violent crime, both Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski insist crime rates are down in the city. LPD, in June 2013, launched a new initiative geared towards a crackdown on violent crime. The Violent Crime Initiative is a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local authorities. And, Yankowski, in June, said that results are positive.

Lansing surely isn't Detroit. It isn't Flint. Heck, I'll take Lansing over Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and other gang saturated areas in Michigan. But, it's hard to ignore the recent events. Do you still feel safe in Lansing? How do correct the problems?
