As we all still grapple with the loss of our friend, the iconic Betty White, people still showed up and showed out in her memory on what would have been her 100th birthday.

It was a celebration we know she would have been proud of as it was a way to help out local animals in need. Animals, like the ones at the Capital Area Humane Society!

The Betty White Challenge

Normally, these internet "challenges" are silly, stupid or even downright dangerous. However, the "Betty White Challenge" is as wholesome and golden-hearted as our "Golden Girl" herself.

Betty White passed just a few weeks before her 100th birthday so when the day finally came around, people wanted to not only do something to celebrate her but to honor her life and legacy.

She was an animal lover through-and-through, giving decades of her time and financial support to organizations like the Los Angeles Zoo and more, per Vanity Fair.

When she passed, Vanity Fair cites CBS News in reporting the idea for the challenge itself to have come from Twitter user, Lisa Powell (@icedcoffees):

The idea caught on and eventually, the challenge was born in which people all over the world donated at least $5 to an animal-related cause or organization.

From bigger nonprofits to local animal shelters, the love Betty White had for animals was felt and passed on to countless animals in need.

Lansing's Capital Area Humane Society Participates in Betty White Challenge

Local shelters across Mid-Michigan were celebrating Betty White's birthday and letting people know they would be participating in the Betty White Challenge, including our friends at the Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS)!

On the day of the challenge, CAHS shared on their Facebook page they would be accepting donations as well as the chance for people to come in and get reduced adoption fees:

Betty White Brings Successful Fundraiser to Capital Area Humane Society

Now, less than a week after Betty White's birthday on January 17th, CAHS has announced, as reported by WILX News 10, they received over $30,000 in donations from the Lansing area's animal lovers.

Per the Capital Area Humane Society's Facebook page, the total amount of donations as of Wednesday, January 18th was at $35,702 thanks to 892 individuals...and is still growing as more donations trickle in!

In the same announcement, CAHS also shared they were honoring Betty White's legacy even further by naming a room in their new Adoption Center after her.

We can't think of a better way to celebrate and honor the legacy of the incredible woman Betty White was. As the Capital Area Humane Society posted and the "Golden Girls" theme song goes, "Thank you for being a friend."
