In August of 2013, 12 year-old Abby Wetherell was attacked by a black bear near Cadillac while jogging. Abby played dead and needed more than 100 stitches to close up wounds on her leg and back. She is now 15 and healed physically. Authorities set traps for the bear but never got it.

On April 30 of this year, a northern Michigan man shot a bear after the bear fatally attacked his dog. Investigators determined the man acted in justifiable self-defense. Michigan State University did genetic testing and discovered DNA from the bear matched samples taken from Abby's clothing after the attack.

Abby's mother is happy the bear is no longer a threat. DNA also showed the bear had given birth once in 2013 and was likely protecting her cub or cubs at the time. Click here for the full story from usnews.com.
