Diocese Of Lansing Announces Closure Of Local Parish

The Lansing State Journal is reporting that the Diocese of Lansing is planning to close one of its oldest churches this summer.

According to the report, St. Casimir Catholic Parish has plans to close at the end of June after the Parish Council voted in favor of doing so. However, given the coronavirus outbreak and a restriction on public gatherings, the closure date could come at a later time.

LSJ.com reports that the church has experienced a decline in the number of people attending mass over the years. The report says that weekly attendance numbers were less than 400 before the Diocese of Lansing decided to temporarily close all facilities last month. Other Catholic churches in the city have higher attendance.

The report says the last time the Diocese of Lansing closed a parish was back in 2009 when the former Holy Cross Church was closed on Lansing's west side. St. Casimir, located on Sparrow Avenue in the Moores Park neighborhood, first opened in 1921.
