In the heyday of Route 66, America's favorite path westward was filled with iconic roadside attractions. Roadside motels with large cement statues that looked like dinosaurs and even rooms shaped like tee-pees.

During my weekend trip to the UP, we stopped in Mackinaw City to be just in time to realize that everything was closed for the season. Fortunately, they didn't take down the giant wiener just to avoid the snow.
