ANDROMEDA COMMUNITY THEATRE is announcing open auditions for our next production, "Sylvia", by A.R. Gurney.

Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. A street-smart Labradoodle with youthful energy, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection as a twist on the “other woman” plot, while Sylvia just thinks Kate doesn't understand the relationship between a man and his dog.

If you’ve ever owned or loved a dog, or wanted to wring a dog’s neck, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this delightful romantic triangle between Greg, Kate and a dog named Sylvia, who, as Kate puts it, eats a serious hole in their 22 year marriage. And maybe a shoe or two.

“Sylvia” will be directed by Andrew Hipkiss, a founding director of Andromeda Community Theatre. He brings nearly 20 years of experience directing and acting, most recently directing “Witness for the Prosecution”.

Actors are needed for at least two male and two female characters, late teens and up. One actor may play multiple characters. The actor portraying Sylvia should be fit and agile, since the part is physical, getting up and down off the floor, moving through the theatre. She will walk and talk as a person but act like a dog; she won’t be crawling around on all fours, but will “sit”, “beg” and “roll over”.

Note that Sylvia is rated “MATURE” for adult language.

Auditions are scheduled for Sunday, January 19, and Monday, January 20, 2020, at 6:30 pm at Windwalker Underground Gallery located at 125 S. Cochran Ave in Charlotte. Community members interested in performing or volunteering for this production should attend - no experience is necessary!

"Sylvia" will be performed Friday March 27th, Saturday March 28th, and Sunday March 29th, 2020 in Charlotte.

Please be prepared for cold reads during auditions. A preview excerpt of the script will be emailed upon request.
