The protection provided for citizens against eviction or foreclosure was an absolute lifesaver for so many during this trying period of the pandemic. Who knows how many would be homeless today if it weren’t for the action taken early on to protect our ability to keep a roof over our head. Home is where most of us feel the safest, and during the past 15 months safety has been top of mind with everyone.

Fortunately with the number of vaccinated people in Michigan we are in better shape than other places when it comes to covid, but unfortunately as emergency restrictions come to an end, so does rent and mortgage protection. And those who have been out of work with a limited income probably don’t have the funds to get fully caught up on their arrears in rent or mortgage.

Recently the City of Lansing, Cristo Rey Community Center and Capital Area Housing Partnership were awarded eviction prevention funding in the amount of $20,000 from the Cities for FInancial Empowerment Fund. This grant will help those seeking rental assistance, and be provided free counseling to prevent evictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Capital Area Housing Partnership is providing this service to those who need it.

According to WLNS “Keeping people in homes and preventing eviction through rental and mortgage assistance is urgent, especially now with the moratorium ending soon. The Eviction Prevention Boost Grant dollars will allow our Lansing Office of Financial Empowerment to provide even more assistance to our residents who are facing housing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lansing Mayor Andy Schor in a press release. “By working with our community partners, we will use these dollars to help ensure that all who need assistance to keep their homes are able to do so.”

Rental assistance and financial counseling will be provided by this fund, along with technical assistance in support of the partnership. There is help for you if you are affected by this situation.
