Five Fun Stops Along Lansing’s River Trail
Lansing’s River Trail is a series of connected paved pathways, going through the heart of downtown Lansing and beyond. For over 20 miles, you can go from Old Town to Holt, south Lansing to MSU, and the trail is being extended to Lake Lansing in Haslett!
This trail is for non-motorized use, meaning, you can run, walk, roller blade, ride a bicycle, push a stroller, pull a wagon…all while enjoying beautiful scenery and making your way through different parts of the Lansing community.
If you’re out on the River Trail and looking for some great places to stop, try these:
Crego Park: Located just off the River Trail, east of Potter Park Zoo on the way to East Lansing is a secluded, 200 acre park with a little lake perfect for kayaking and fishing. Walking along the water or sitting quietly on the shore gives you a peaceful spot to relax with beautiful views and some great birdwatching.
Old Town – Lansing: Shopping and restaurants await in this north-Lansing neighborhood. After checking out the shops, get back onto the River Trail to ride to the Turner Dodge House or the opposite direction to check out the Brenke Fish Ladder.
Valhalla Park – Holt: The River Trail extends down to Holt (with a new path planned to connect Holt to Mason!). Valhalla is a perfect spot to stop for a break on the south end of the trail. There’s a lake, pond, playground, bathrooms and a wonderful wooded area to explore. Lots of fun for families!
Michigan State University – East Lansing: Yes! You can take the River Trail to MSU! And, while you’re there, enjoy strolling or biking though campus – and maybe a visit to the MSU Dairy Store!
Hawk Island Park – Lansing: This park is such a gem! It has a huge playground, splash pad, swimming area, canoes, a giant hill…and more! The Trail goes around the entire park and extends into a wooded area which takes you to Scott Wood or back toward Mt. Hope Avenue. Head south on the Trail from Hawk Island to get to Maguire Park and follow it into Holt.
Remember these important trail rules:
Stay to the right. Pass on the left. Using a bell on your bike or simply a “passing on your left” is encouraged! Trails are dog friendly – just remember to bring bags to clean up after your pet and that your four-legged friend needs to be on leash that is no longer than 6 feet.
