Great Lakes More Frozen Now than Last Year at this Time
The Detroit Free Press reports that one particular freighter is a week late coming into port because of all the ice it's encountered in its travels, including spending most of Sunday stuck in Lake Michigan just west of the Mackinac Bridge. The Coast Guard had to bust it outta there.
Total ice cover of the Great Lakes is currently at just over 88 percent; last year at this time, it was just over 86 percent ice cover. Even though ice cover peaked at 92.5% at the max last year, it did not break the record.
