HAUNTED MICHIGAN: Stockbridge’s Old 1929 High/Middle School
At the corner of Elizabeth & Wood Streets, stands the old Stockbridge school. It was built in 1929 as the town's high school, additions built in the 1960's, and became the middle school when the new high was constructed on N. Main Street in 1976.
In 2015, after the district refused to sink any more renovation money into the old 1929 school, extra space was added to the new high and the middle school students were transferred there. It became offices for the Stockbridge Police Dept. and the Village of Stockbridge, then it was sold in April 2018 for one dollar.
But there is a rumor about the old school.
Legend says that years ago, one of the school's janitors/maintenance men passed away in his basement quarters. Since then, odd things have been experienced by those who have visited the building; the usual creaks & thuds, shuffling footsteps thru the halls, bathroom fixtures that refuse to work, and unusual sounds emanating from the basement.
Shadows & figures are seen out of the corner of the eye that disappear as soon as you turn to see what it was.
Is the old school indeed haunted by the ghost of an old janitor?
The building will be 100 years old in 2029 and it's ripe to hold some sort of paranormal activity: former faculty members and students alike. Stockbridge had its share of students dying in some sort of tragic accident...could they be walking the halls trying to re-capture the days of their youth? Could the spirits of old faculty members be reminiscing about their heydays? Or are these happenings simply the work of the deceased maintenance man?
Rumors, facts or someone's fertile imagination?
Unless anyone can shed more light on these occurrences, we may never know. In the meantime, if you can get permission to investigate the school, good luck and let us know the results.
