We all know that social media is a place full of arguments. One of the topic of the arguments that you usually see this time of year is the topic of fireworks. It seems that people either love 'em or hate 'em and they have their reasons why they feel that way. Some people with pets don't like fireworks because it scares their dogs. Some people don't like them because they have to get up early and go to work. Some people don't like them because of other personal reasons. And then there's lots of people that love fireworks and don't have a problem with them at all. I know that over the weekend there was a big discussion on my neighborhood Facebook page regarding the "loud" fireworks that were being launched. (I wasn't home at the time so I missed out on all of  the loud booms.)

Well, if you didn't know, there were some changes made last year to the fireworks law in Michigan and it looks like you're going to be hearing LOTS of fireworks--especially next week. According to the state law, Michigan residents will be able to launch their personal fireworks from June 29th to July 4th and they can launch those fireworks until 11:45 pm each of those nights. People can also launch fireworks on July 5th, if it falls on a Friday or Saturday but this year the 5th is on a Sunday. But wait, here's where things get a little confusing.

According to the State Fire Marshal, "if no action is taken at the local government level, state law allows for fireworks to be used all year long. Simply put, if there is no local ordinance restricting fireworks, then there are no local fireworks restrictions in your municipality.” This could be why so many people are confused about what's legal and illegal when it comes to fireworks in Michigan. You can click here to check out the current fireworks law in Michigan.

With lots of city fireworks displays cancelled this year, get ready for some booms in your neighborhood. Try to be patient. Try to be courteous. Try not to fight on Facebook. Good luck. Be safe.
