Living in the Midwest means a couple of things, one of them being that the weather is unpredictable, and you can experience multiple seasons within a day meanwhile the other is farmland. The great plains are a part of the Midwest territory, but they aren't the only states with a prominent farm industry. Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio are all states with numerous farms spread throughout their boundaries.

Farming is important to our livelihood as this is one of the main sources of our food but as technology continues to evolve, farms are becoming scarcer. Each farm has its own techniques and beliefs that they have been practicing for years but just like anything else in the world, there are superstitions. Design isn't something that farms take into account as much as other industries, but the star that you see on most barns seems more significant than a simple decor choice.

Most of us have driven past a farm and stared at their barn whether it be made from wood or some other material. Most of them are painted red but there are several different colors that a barn can be, but that's not the most awestriking detail. Have you ever seen a star on the outside of a barn? Well. it's more than just a decoration, in fact, there is a very distinct reasoning for the hanging star.

Some stars are painted on the barns while others are made from metal and attached to the frame of the barn, either way they have the same meaning. The barn star, as they are called, is tradition that was passed down from German and Dutch settlers from the earliest moments of Ohio and America as a whole.

The German and Dutch settlers painted or installed the stars under the belief that the star would ward off any evil that was sent to destroy the farm and they are known to bring good luck to farmers. Many farmers have said the story that's told is true as they feel the same way about the star that they do about a horseshoe that you would see nailed over doorway.

So no, the stars aren't some fancy decorations that you would see in the modern farmhouse decor but instead are there to bring good fortune and fend off evil for the farmer and their farm.
