Charming Or Challenging? $300K Castle In Port Huron Might Be Your Next Big Project
A castle for sale in Michigan seems to have "good bones", but that's not all it's got...
I'll be honest, when I first saw a picture of the Port Huron, Mich., home scrolling through Facebook, I thought, "Wow, it's gorgeous! $300K seems like such a good deal. Someone could turn this into a really wonderful home - or bed and breakfast!"

And then I read some of the comments...
First, a bit of history, according to the Society of Architectural Historians, the home known simply as "The Castle", was built in 1892 for for John W. Thomson, an agent for the Lake Superior Transit Company and other steamboat lines, and Port Huron's Deputy Collector of Customs during President Lincoln's administration.

The listing claims the home "embodies historic charm and grandeur" and is a "symbol of architectural splendor and luxury". It has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and four kitchens, according to the listing. (Four kitchens seems like a lot - and I don't see that many in the photos, but OK...)
It's located across from the St. Clair River, which you can see from some of the balconies. The balconies are my favorite feature! They're rounded and the stonework is beautiful!
The listing also says the home also has nine fireplaces and got a new roof in 2024.
Sounds pretty great so far, right? Well, moving on to the comments where the listing is posted on the Tiny House Facebook page...
Some eagle-eyed folks spotted something I hadn't caught in glancing through the pics... More than one person commented that there appears to be drug paraphernalia on the counter in the bathroom.
Other comments include:
"That’s a lot of black mold"
"Looking at these pictures gave me mesothelioma"
"It’s giving Season 1 of American Horror Story. No thanks. #murderhouse"
"This house just sold for $150k and nothing was done to it. Needs tons of money to rehab. Good luck to whoever buys it."
I did a little digging and was able to find a different listing in which the price is listed as $150,000...
The comments were not all negative though! Some say sure, it needs work, but it has the potential to be GORGEOUS.
