A recent outbreak of E. coli linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounders has resulted in significant health concerns, with approximately 50 reported illnesses across multiple states and one confirmed fatality.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified the outbreak strain as E. coli O157:H7, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children and the elderly.
E. Coli Symptoms
Symptoms of E. coli infection typically appear within one to two days after exposure and may include:
- Severe abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea (which can be bloody)
- Fever
- Vomiting
If you're experiencing severe symptoms seek medical attention immediately.
The CDC has emphasized that while many recover without treatment, some cases can lead to severe complications requiring hospitalization.
Where Is The E. Coli Outbreak Happening?
The reported cases range from ages 13 to 88, with ten people hospitalized, including a child diagnosed with a serious condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Most cases have been concentrated in Colorado and Nebraska, but illnesses have also been reported in states like Iowa, Kansas, Utah, and Wyoming.
What Is The Source of Contamination?
Initial investigations suggest that raw slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounders may be the likely source of contamination.
While beef patties were also examined, they are less likely to be the culprit due to stringent safety protocols in place for meat processing.
