A five-year-old child is dead and a family is grieving after an accidental shooting happened near Newaygo on Monday afternoon.

Michigan State Police Say A 5 Year Old Was Shot And Killed Near Newaygo

According to Lieutenant Michelle Robinson with the Michigan State Police, they were called to the home near West 68th Street and Bingham Avenue around 3:25 yesterday afternoon for the shooting.

The investigation is still trying to figure out exactly what happened that led to the five-year-old getting shot. While police are piecing everything together she asked everyone to keep the family in their thoughts.

Firearms Death Continue To Rise In Michigan

In 2021, firearms were responsible for 48,830 deaths across America, which is a 6.7% increase from 2020.

Out of the nearly 50,000 deaths, 1,544 deaths occurred in Michigan. That is a 5% increase from 2020.

Since 2011, the number of deaths from firearms has surpassed the number of deaths from motor vehicle crashes in Michigan.

 New Michigan Gun Laws For 2024

On February 13th, several new gun laws went into effect intending to protect families and children in particular.

The new secure storage law requires individuals to keep unattended weapons unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is likely to be on the premises.

If the person fails to store a firearm as required and a minor gets ahold of it they could be found guilty of breaking the law in several ways.

In this case, since a minor discharged the firearm and inflicted death on themselves or another individual: the gun owner could face a felony punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years or a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
