Devastating! Want Fries With That? Maybe Not McDonald’s!
Say it isn't so, please!
"Do you want fries with that?" has been one of the famous lines coming from McDonald's. Their fries, judged as America's favorite french fry, have always been one of the major attractions at McDonald's. But soon it may not be!
Their biggest supplier of french fries has decided to shut down one of their factories, so many people are worried there will be a fries shortage.
Can you imagine ordering food at McDonald's and saying "with fries" and you hear, "NO, you can't have fries with that!"
Oh, the pain of it all.
An article on the MSN.com website, says our beloved McDonald's fries are actually not prepared from scratch on site. Shocking! Mickey D's uses contracted suppliers to prep the fries by cutting, partially frying, and flash freezing them to deliver to restaurants to cook the rest of the way so the fries are hot and fresh as expected. I never knew that!
Their biggest supplier is Lamb Weston in Idaho, and according to the MSN article, the company announced that it will lay off nearly 400 employees from the Connell plant and temporarily scale back production lines elsewhere. This is due to declining customer potato demand and oversupply issues. CEO Tom Werner is specifically blaming the $5 meal deal at McDonald's for their issues.
Our sister station, WRKR, said McDonald's introduced the $5 meal deal back in May as an affordable meal option for American families as they've been struggling in times of high inflation, and a cost of living that many jobs can't keep up with in wages.
So, is this the beginning of the end for those delicious McDonald's fries?
Lamb Weston says no. They still should be able to meet demand.
Let's hope for the best!
Now, McDonald's, about your ice cream machines!
