Is There An Early Snowfall Coming to Michigan This Year?
The Old Farmer's Almanac is at it again. They're predicting a possible early snowfall this yearm having been forecasting weather, among other things, for nearly 200-years.
Just having released their predictions for 2025-26 winter, they say:
"The coldest blasts will target the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, and New England. Residents from Minnesota to Maine are warned to brace for consistent cold snaps, with mid-January and mid-February both set for especially bitter temperatures. The Northwest, including Washington and Idaho, should also prepare for a deep winter’s chill."
What about us in Michigan?
We all know here in West Michigan that we have a sort of love/hate relationship with Lake Michigan. Totally love the lake Spring, Summer and Fall, but that dreaded "lake effect" for snow fall can be a killer!
The Farmer's Almanac says that September and October are looking a little colder than normal, mid 50s it looks like, and maybe dryer.
However, they do call for snow to begin in November, so snow lovers you may want rejoice!
How does the Farmer's Almanac come up with all their predictions?
It's a combination of many things. They use historical data, the sun and what it's cycles are doing, and good old meteorology. And, they are not that far off usually. The have an accuracy rate of 80 percent or better.

Grand Rapids?
On average, Grand Rapids has about 77 inches of snow each season, with the most falling in December through February, but November is right behind.
I'll never forget when I first moved to Grand Rapids, 1969-70. The snow began falling in mid November and a swear it never stopped. That is nearly true since we had almost 100 inches of snow that season. Ouch!
Better start planning to build your snowman!
