All Eggs Will Disappear From Shelves In Michigan On December 31st
Eggs are one of the most highly purchased breakfast food items and we have seen just how serious people can get about their eggs. It wasn’t too long ago that we were paying upwards of $39 for a 60-count box of eggs. That mainly had to do with the avian flu that was going around at the time which caused a lot of eggs to be thrown out.
This ended up inflating the price of eggs for a small amount of time, but it did get serious and shows how high and in demand they are. Michigan is about to make a major change to the way eggs are distributed in the state, and some stores may see eggs completely disappear off the shelves and be replaced by a new set of eggs.
Back in 2019, Public Act 132 from the Animal Industry Act passed legislation in the state that said that starting December 31, 2024 shell eggs sold in the state of Michigan have to come from cage-free housing systems only.
The release which was signed into order by Director Tim Boring and Governor Gretchen Whitmer goes into a little bit more detail on the rules going forward:
The law also prohibits operators from tethering or confining hens, for all or the majority of a day, in a manner that prevents them from lying down, standing up, fully extending their limbs, or turning around freely. In addition, egg-laying hens cannot be tethered or confined in an enclosure other than a cage-free housing system or with less than the amount of usable floor space per hen as provided in the housing guidelines for cage-free production.
So will eggs be flying off the shelves on December 31st? It depends on how ahead of the game these stores stay. They may start to transition early, so it goes smoothly and they don't run into a situation where eggs are out of stock.
