It's been made very clear that in the past few elections, making sure you are eligible to vote, and registered to do so is very important. The number of people who admit they didn't vote is alarming, with almost a third of the population skipping the last two Presidential Primary Elections.

So now, more than ever, it's time to get involved, and get registered to vote, but what are the Michigan laws, and when is the last day you can register to vote in this year's election?

What do I Need to Vote in Michigan?

The most important thing you'll need to vote in Michigan is a state-issued ID. Most people use their driver's license, but not everyone has one of those. If you don't, you can still request an ID that distinguishes that you can't drive, but you are a resident of the state of Michigan.

How Can I Get Registered To Vote in Michigan?

If you aren't yet registered, the process is simple. Michigan has a web page where you can register to vote right there. All you need is your license, or ID. Simply fill out the form, and you should be ready to vote.

However, if applying online isn't your thing, then you can also update your voting information by doing one of the following:

  • Visit your local Secretary of State Branch Office
  • Go to the City or Township Clerk's office, or your County Clerk's office
  • Any State Agency can provide public assistance or assistance to people with disabilities
  • Mail in a completed Voter Registration Form (must be postmarked at least 15 days before the election, which is Oct. 21st this year)
  • Through a Voter Registration Drive

When is the Last Day I can Register to Vote?

If you're registering online, or via mail, you'll need to make sure you take care of that at least 15 days before the election, so as to be sure your request is approved before election day. This year, that cutoff date is Oct. 21st.

However, if you're registering in person, Michigan is thankfully a same-day registration state. So long as you're registered and on the rolls before 8 p.m. on Election Day, you can participate in the Nov. 5th election.

You'll still need to visit one of the locations listed above to get your registration in, AND have your valid ID (you have to have been a resident for more than 30 days). You'll also need to bring a proof of residency, so a current utility bill, a bank statement, a paycheck, or some other government document, just to be safe.

What if I've moved, do I still need to update my registration?

Yes. If you've moved to a new township, city, or community, and the address on your license has changed, you will need to re-register. Also, per state law, you'll need to change your license as soon as possible.
