DOJ Cases Show Which Michigan Gangs Are on Law Enforcement’s Radar

Thankfully, Michigan doesn't publish an official ranking of its most dangerous gangs, because even criminals do not need another power poll. Recent federal cases do show which organizations have drawn serious side-eye from law enforcement recently.

Almighty Vice Lord Nation

The Almighty Vice Lord Nation, or AVLN, is a national criminal organization with "branches" in Detroit. The U.S. Department of Justice says members were convicted in 2024 of murder, drug trafficking, weapons crimes, and RICO conspiracy. RICO means the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, a federal law targeting coordinated criminal enterprises... or gangs.

Three members received sentences of 60, 60, and 70 years. Another member was convicted in April 2025 after prosecutors said he stabbed a victim 15 times to maintain or move up his position in the gang.

Seven Mile Bloods

The Seven Mile Bloods operate on Detroit's east side, in a territory members call the "Red Zone." In 2024, its leader received life in prison following convictions that included racketeering conspiracy, two murders, 10 attempted murders, and firearms offenses.

Purple Heart Vets

The Purple Heart Vets, or PHV, operates primarily in northwest Detroit. Federal prosecutors say the group uses violence, drug trafficking, and fraud to fund its operations. In April 2026, a self-described founder pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy. According to court records, this gang even managed to milk $520,709 in fraudulent pandemic benefits.

Keep in mind, these aren't necessarily the largest gangs in Michigan. Jackson's Group Violence Intervention program warns that loosely affiliated street groups and drug crews can also drive serious gun violence without a famous name, matching colors, or organizational flowchart.
