Celebrating 115 Years: The Historic Hanover High School, 1911-2026

I didn’t go to school in Hanover, but I’ve visited the old school a few times over the years.

Although this is Hanover’s most iconic, historic school, the first schoolhouse in Hanover was a small log structure in 1839. With the village growing, a new school was soon needed. An all-new one-room schoolhouse was made of brick in 1850.

This still wasn’t enough. So, in 1874, another school was built: larger, stronger and with more space. With more rooms than the previous schools, it handled most of the town kids, from first grade to twelfth. As with oh, so many Michigan buildings from over 100 years ago, the school was destroyed by fire in the summer of 1910.

A new school started construction later that year, finishing in 1911. 23 years later, the school added a gym that was built from pieces of discarded town buildings.

Since the 1940s, the school district has been known as Hanover-Horton, a conglomeration of lesser nearby districts. This caused a need for yet another new school and in the 1950s, a new elementary was built in Hanover.

1959: A new high school opened in Horton, catering to grades 9 thru 12. Junior high students (7th & 8th grade) stayed at the old Hanover school.
1962: 7th & 8th graders were moved to the Horton school.

Not able to sell the old Hanover school, it was empty for 25 years.   in 1977, the Hanover-Horton Area Historical Society took over, which they retain to this day, located at 105 Fairview Street.
