In Michigan, certain points of etiquette aren't suggestions. It's a quiet understanding, passed down like a family recipe written on a grease-stained three-by-five card. You can debate college football loyalties, lake superiority, and whether winter builds character. You cannot debate coney dogs.

Michigan Food Etiquette Isn’t Optional

Let's get this out of the way. You do not put ketchup on a coney dog in Michigan. That isn't bold. That is survival advice. Imagine calling a 'loner' with a handful of nines and tens and getting Euchred. The ridicule you'd face would pale in comparison to the side eyes and verbal abuse you'll receive if you put anything other than coney sauce, onions, and mustard on our state's finest hot dog.

Why Coney Dogs Are Treated Differently

This rule isn't just diner snobbery. It's cultural preservation. Walk into a place like Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit or Virginia Coney Island in Jackson and ask for ketchup, and you'll feel the temperature drop. Not outside. Inside. In the soul of the room.

Michigan food etiquette is simple. Respect the lakes. Never pass on Vernors. Ranch is acceptable on nearly everything (but never on a coney dog). And if you're eating a coney in Michigan, understand that you're taking part in a state tradition older than most road construction projects.

Ketchup has its place. Fries. Burgers. Maybe eggs if you're feeling chaotic. But a coney dog has a personality. Adding ketchup to one is something that should never be done in public. If you must, order them to go and eat them in a dark shed so no one sees your blatant disregard for Michigan tradition.

Respect the Coney or Order It to Go

In the Mitten State, we don't ask much. Just this. Eat the coney dog as intended, and we can all get along.

Inside Jackson, Michigan's Long Vacant Gilbert's Steakhouse

Listed for a quarter million dollars at the time, I was able to tour the former Gilbert's Steakhouse in June of 2024, a year before it would be torn down on September 17, 2025. Here's what this former Jackson, Michigan (technically located in Blackman Township), looked like a year before it was razed.
