The Friction Between Bay City and Madonna
Madonna was born in Bay City, Michigan.
Some people believe Madonna hates Bay City, Michigan.
Madonna does not hate Bay City, Michigan.
There it is, in black and white. Madonna does not hate the place where she grew up. However, there have been problems in the past with some of Bay City’s government figures,
Madonna was the first person from Bay City to be inducted into Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall back in March 2008. When that event took place, ‘Bay City’ was placed underneath Madonna’s name. Even though most residents of that City were proud of their native girl, city officials were bitchy when it came to showing any kind of pride.
The reason?

It was public knowledge that during Madonna’s early struggling years, she posed nude for art classes and even appeared unclothed in a cheapie film titled A Certain Sacrifice. The photos somehow found their way into Penthouse and Playboy magazines.
There was a plan to give Madonna the key to the city, but when then-Mayor Timothy G. Sullivan heard about Madonna’s past, he refused to give her the ceremonial key. According to Sullivan, “No key to the city for Madonna. We'll give her a warm welcome, but the key represents the citizens of the community, and it would not be in good taste to give her the key given certain circumstances".
For 40 years, Bay City didn’t seem to treat Madonna with much respect, due to her past. Yet, no one has ever given Bay City as much attention or publicity as Madonna. So where is the recognition? Other towns and cities who have sported lesser celebrities seem to honor those people, but for someone with the magnitude achievements Madonna has produced, it’s odd that Bay City seems reticent to show her much appreciation.
Finally, almost 40 years later in 2020, a mural with Madonna’s likeness was painted on the side of the old Adams Street City Market building.
The following year – 2021 – a permanent Madonna exhibit was put on display at the Michigan Rock & Roll Legends Hall of Fame at the Historical Museum of Bay County.
My opinion?
There are definitely the naysayers and Michiganians who are displeased with the way Madonna has displayed herself over the years, but it’s undeniable the extra fame she brought to our state – and to Bay City. As one of pop music’s most successful vocalists of all time, there should be more acknowledgements. AT LEAST a sign welcoming you to the city that reads “Birthplace of Madonna” or something similar.
If officials would only realize the millions of dollars the city could benefit by marketing itself as such.....well, we’ll have to wait and see.
