DNR Previews Michigan’s 2025 Deer Season: Population, Risks, Reporting
For some, this time of year in Michigan is all about pumpkin spice and cider, while for others, it's more about camo and tree stands. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued its official preview of the 2025 whitetail deer season, and it contains a couple of interesting nuggets of information.

Michigan’s Deer Population & 2025 Outlook
According to the DNR, the deer population is 'steady' across the state. At last check, it's estimated that there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 million whitetail deer, with the vast majority located in southern Lower Michigan. Translation: There's plenty of venison to go around and lots of opportunities to harvest a deer that might otherwise crash through your windshield.
Ice Storm Threats: Clearing Your Path Early
Ice storms in March 2025 throughout the Upper Peninsula and Southern Lower Michigan (12 counties in all) could make getting to your usual hunting spot challenging. The DNR recommends checking and clearing a path ahead of time.

EHD Spreads: Counties Already Impacted
The Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD, outbreak in the southern Lower Michigan also has the DNR on edge, with EHD already confirmed in 8 counties: Calhoun, Cass, Eaton, Jackson, Lenawee, Mecosta, Van Buren, and Washtenaw. Don't be surprised to see the number of counties with EHD increase as the season gets underway.

Mandatory Harvest Reporting: 72-Hour Rule
Don’t forget to report your harvest within 72 hours using the DNR tool (Michigan.gov/DNRHarvestReport) or via the app. So grab your hunter's orange, stock up on snacks, and remember—deer season is an unofficial holiday in Michigan.
