According to new FBI crime data analyzed by iSelectInsurance, reports of vandalism and property damage in Michigan dropped 13% during the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. That's good news. Less good news? Michigan still recorded more than 10,000 reports during that four-month stretch alone and more than 270,000 incidents in the last five years.

What Counts as Vandalism in Michigan?

When most Michigan folks hear the word "vandalism," they conjure up images of spray paint on a wall. In reality, property destruction or damage can include everything from breaking windows and keying vehicles to smashing mailboxes, damaging signs, and committing graffiti, as well as intentionally destroying public or private property.

And yes, for anyone suddenly remembering a high school prank from 25 years ago, toilet papering a yard can technically become a crime if it causes damage or creates cleanup costs. Fortunately, a few rolls of Charmin usually don't land in the same category as torching a park bench or smashing storefront windows.
