Enter Michigan’s Shaming Wall: Poachers’ Trophies on Display
Michigan outdoors lovers are expected to follow the rules and hunt during the proper season. Ignore them, and you risk hefty fines—or even jail time. But the real sting for many poachers isn’t the fine or the time—it’s knowing their trophy now hangs on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wall of Shame.

What Is the Poachers’ Wall of Shame?
The DNR Lansing Customer Service Center, at 4166 Legacy Parkway, is home to Michigan's Poachers Wall of Shame. The racks lining a stairway to the lower level were confiscated from hunters who illegally possessed them.
Steep Consequences: Fines and Jail Time
If the thought of seeing your trophy mount on the DNR's wall isn't enough of a reason for you to follow the rules, here's a quick overview of what violating them could mean for you.
According to the DNR, if you don't have the proper permits, hunt out of season, use improper methods of harvesting game, or take a shot outside of the designated time in Michigan, the mandatory penalty is a $50 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.
Is the Trophy Worth the Shame?
If you're caught with an illegal deer, bear, or wild turkey, you'll face a fine of $200 to $1,000, plus a $1,000 restitution fee for a deer or turkey, and a $1,500 fee for a bear. Plus, you’ll face 5 to 90 days in jail and lose hunting privileges for the rest of this year, plus three more.
