So what's the mystery?

For those who have seen this postcard floating around at various times, it may be a mystery.

Michigan has many establishments with “cutesy” names, like 'Phlopp House' that you see in the above postcard. The postcards usually list the town it is located in. The problem is, which town is it in? Postcards list Michigan towns like Amasa, Cheboygan, Frederic and others.

When asked, some roadtrippers who travel north think they've seen this shack along Old 27 and even alongside US-127. Heck, it looks familiar to me, too. So just exactly where is it? Or was it? Does it exist anymore, was it torn down, was it a gag or a legitimate thing? And what's with the 'Hotel Jefferson' sign?

There are a few who have actually tried to pinpoint where this place was just to ease their minds...well, now you can be at ease.

The truth of the matter is, the shack that is posted as the “Phlopp House” is now torn down...it stood out in the countryside in Greencrest, Arkansas with the sign "Hotel Jefferson – Modern". The photo was snapped in 1942 and made into a gag postcard.

It was distributed to souvenir shops in various states with localization added to make it look like it was from particular towns. So sorry, explorers...this was not in Michigan and it's been long demolished.

One name that has been over-used throughout the country is “Dew Drop Inn”. Michigan has a few of those along with the “Stumble Inn” and “Faull Inn” among others.

The gallery below shows a few of these old gag postcards as well as some legitimate 'inns' in our state.
