Lake Superior is already famous for preserving shipwrecks thanks to its icy temperatures. Its deep waters remain around 39 degrees year-round, creating an environment that's so cold and pristine that bodies don't decompose at these depths. It's this icy fact that led to the phrase, "Lake Superior never gives up her dead."

When Is the Superior Maximus Livestream?

Researchers aboard the R/V Blue Heron will livestream their exploration of Superior Maximus on June 5 at 1 p.m. Eastern through Great Lakes Now.

The expedition will take viewers into one of the least-explored places in the Great Lakes as scientists search for clues about the creatures and ecosystems living in the darkness of Lake Superior's lowest known point.
