Michigan's sky looks like somebody dragged a dirty furnace filter across it, but the source of this mess is hundreds of miles... north. CNN reports some of the largest wildfires are burning in west-central Ontario, with smoke pouring across the Great Lakes. Canada also reported 109 new fires... in one day.

Some are newly sparked, while others remain blazing out of control. As of Thursday, July 16, 2026, Lansing and surrounding Mid-Michigan cities are blanketed with thick haze, and the lingering smell of smoke hangs in the air.

USA Today's wildfire tracker shows heavy smoke coming from fires across Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. For Michigan, the biggest troublemakers are the Ontario fires nearest Lake Superior.

The Washington Post reports roughly 20 large, out-of-control fires are burning in Ontario. The largest is in the remote Wabakimi Provincial Park, about 150 miles north of Lake Superior, and has grown beyond 867,000 acres.

Among all the burning wood, there is a sliver of hope, but it comes with an asterisk. A wind shift on Friday, July 17, may briefly improve Michigan's air quality. Rain near the fires could also temporarily reduce the smoke.

However, the Post says that the rain will be short-lived and that drier weather will follow, meaning additional Canadian smoke could return over the weekend. More rain is possible for the wildfire-affected areas on Monday, but not the sustained wet weather needed to snuff the flames. In other words, relief may visit, but it won't unpack its suitcase.
