Jackson’s YWCA…Where Was It Located?
This is not an article about the history of Jackson’s YMCA.
There is a photo out there, showing a building described as the YWCA in Jackson , Michigan. So where was it located?
There have been a few YMCA locations, like 2151 Ferguson Road (Summit Township), downtown at 127 W. Wesley Street (current location), and a former one at 129 W. Cortland (now a parking lot next to the former Vermeulen’s Furniture building).

So, looking at the photo of the YWCA, just where was the location?
When did the YMCA in Jackson begin?
According to the Jackson Historical Facebook page, the Jackson YMCA began in a church in 1896, and about a year later, the YWCA would meet in different buildings. However, an article in The Daily Citizen dated March 31, 1868, stated that the rooms of the Young Men’s Christian AssocIation “in the Marble Frost block, over the store of the W.R. & S.C. Reynolds are, we are glad to see, nearly ready for occupation.”
1868? That’s almost 30 years earlier than the much-mentioned date of 1896.
All I want to know is:
where was the YWCA building that is shown on an old postcard in the gallery below? Does anyone have an idea?
YWCA, Jackson (and Old YMCA)
