If you've had green beans, peaches, or even pineapples out of a can recently, chances are, you probably got them from a Del Monte label.

The pantry staple has been through just about every home across the nation; however, the staple just announced that it's filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

What Is Chapter 11 Bankruptcy?

A company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy is a notice from a company that is struggling, but isn't going under. It allows them to still operate and reorganize and figure out their debt before falling apart.

It gives the company a chance to react before liquidating everything and just disappearing overnight. It could mean cutting deals with creditors, reducing their costs, and restructuring how they operate.

How Michigan Stores Could Be Affected

So, what exactly does this mean for us here in Michigan? It may actually affect us in more ways than you'd expect it to.

The famous brand Del Monte is basically everywhere. From Meijer and Kroger stores in Mid-Michigan, to even the most local of grocers here in the state. The brand, also makes major donations to food banks as well as bulk donation programs, which does include the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

The effects of Del Monte pulling back or restructuring how they operate could change everything from how you shop to what is getting handed to those local families in need.

No Production Plants, But a Big Footprint

While Del Monte does not have any operating facilities here in Lansing, it still has a massive footprint on Michigan shelves. For them to start pulling products or brands, would be extremely noticeable, especially to canned fruit and vegetables.

The company is currently working on reducing its debt and coming out stronger; however, many bankruptcy announcements aren't as simple as a reset button. It is a signal that even the bigger brand names are struggling to keep up.

There is no mention of pulling or stopping the distribution of any of its products at this time.
