Halloween in Michigan comes with a few guarantees.

Someone's costume is going to need a winter coat. The temperature will probably change about three times before trick-or-treating starts. And there's always that possibility of snow.

But how often does Lansing actually see snow on Halloween?

Probably not as often as you'd think.

How Often Does It Snow on Halloween in Lansing?

According to historical weather records, measurable snowfall on October 31 is pretty unusual in Lansing, even though Michigan has certainly given us some rather cold Halloweens.

Michigan's Snowy Halloween History in 2019 and 2023

Take 2019, for example.

That Halloween brought winterlike weather to the Lansing area, with snow and strong winds making things a little less enjoyable for anyone planning to spend the evening outside.

And then there was 2023.

Michigan experienced another snowy Halloween, with communities across the state seeing flakes and accumulating snow. Flint recorded 1.1 inches, while Saginaw picked up half an inch, according to the National Weather Service.

Why Halloween Snowfall Varies Across Mid-Michigan

But here's where things get interesting.

Just because it snows in Lansing doesn't mean it's snowing everywhere.

East Lansing, Holt, DeWitt, Okemos, and Grand Ledge can experience different conditions.

There's also a difference between seeing snowflakes and actually measuring snowfall.

A few flakes floating through the air may make Halloween feel like Christmas, but that doesn't mean the snowfall will be measurable in official weather records.

And that's probably why some of us remember more snowy Halloweens than the records may actually suggest.

Of course, it is Michigan, though. Give it 10 minutes, and we may have a different discussion about tomorrow's forecast.
