If you have lived here in the state of Michigan long enough, you are fully aware... winter isn't just a select time kind of occurrence. It hits either lightly and all at once... or simply whatever it wants frankly.

Why Michigan Winters Hit So Hard

Lately, it seems mother nature has been out trying to break records.

A recent look at the snowfall across the state shows just how wild things can get, especially when lake-effect snow gets involved. Michigan, particularly areas near the Great Lakes, is basically built for big snow fall totals, just maybe not the people.

How Lake-Effect Snow Powers Massive Totals

Cold air rolls over the relatively warmer lakes, picks up moisture, and just unloads it once it lands.

The Upper Peninsula Is On Another Level

That is why places in the Upper Peninsula are in a league of their own. We're talking 200 plus inches of snow in a typical year, with some spots pushing closer to 300 inches when everything hits just right.

Even downstate, it can get crazy. The city of Grand Rapids, for example, has had winters topping over 100 inches, including a massive 116-inch season back in 2013-2014.

Michigan has seen single-day snowfall records pushing around 30 inches in just 24 hours, which is the kind of snow that shuts everything down fast.

The Most Snow Ever Recorded in Michigan

This year has been crazy for the state of Michigan when it comes to snow fall. Marquette, Michigan has held the state record for most snowfall in a single winter, with 319.8 inches in 2001-2002. That's over 26 feet of snow.

Other Michigan communities have tried living up to that (not by residents choice). In fact, Calumet has seen some winters pushing close to 390 inches of snow. The Michigan city of Herman in the UP, holds one of the biggest single-day records of snow fall, with over 30 inches of snow.

Could you imagine waking up and basically being buried?

Let's hope for an early spring.
