Michigan Tater Tot Recall: Check Your Freezer Now
If your freezer is basically a tiny Michigan winter and has potatoes inside of it, you may want to pay attention. Some tater tots are being tied to a big recall. Not exactly the crunchy surprise anyone ordered.
Why the Tater Tots Are Being Recalled
The FDA says McCain Foods USA Inc. (based in Idaho) is voluntarily recalling about 38,853 cases of frozen tater tot products because they may contain “clear, hard plastic fragments.” That’s the kind of crunch you don’t want to hear. There’s also a serious choking hazard, along with other possible issues that could come from consuming plastic.

The FDA is calling it a Class II recall, which basically means the risk of serious harm is considered low, but temporary or reversible issues are possible if someone consumes the contaminated product.
Which Products Are Affected
There are two products involved in this recall:
- Ore-Ida Tater Tots shaped potatoes (UPC 1 00 72714 00215 8)
- Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrel (UPC 1 07 34730 62740 0)
It should be noted that these were largely foodservice-sized cases, like the 30-pound Ore-Ida cases (item OIF00215A) and Sysco’s 6/5-pound bags (item 1000006067), so they’re more likely to show up at restaurants, schools, and cafeterias. But plenty of people still buy in bulk, so use some caution.
What to Do If You Have Them
What do you do if you have the product? If you’ve got one of these packages, don’t cook it “just this once.” Toss it or return it to where it was purchased. As of now, no injuries or illnesses have been reported, and it’s not clear how the plastic got in there.
