Spartans Stung Late as New Hampshire Takes Opener 4–3
Michigan State University's Hockey Team just opened its 2025-26 season with a tough game at Munn Ice Arena, falling 4-3 to New Hampshire on a goal in the final seconds. After the Spartans pulled even late, the Wildcats' Marty Lavins found the winner with 5.2 seconds left to steal the opener.
How the Game Started for MSU Hockey
MSU struck first on a first-period power play from Anthony Romani before UNH answered on the man-advantage. The Wildcats grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second, but the Spartans were able to respond with Charlie Stramel to make it 2-2.

In the third, UNH moved back in front on another power-play tally. MSU's Tommi Mannisto tied it 3-3 with 4:21 to play, setting the stage for the later win.
The game's final was 4-3 with the Spartans trailing.
Highlights of the Night
The night had the hallmarks of an opener between ranked expectations and a hungry opponent. Michigan State was able to generate plenty of momentum, finishing with a clear edge in shots on goal, which New Hampshire countered with a timely special-teams goal, and won key details like blocks and faceoffs.
Head coach Adam Nightingale has emphasized that expectations around this group are earned and embraced. The quick turnaround offers an immediate chance to respond, with game two of the series being Friday, October 10, again at Munn Ice Arena.
What is Next for the Spartans
While it may have been a stumble with the opening, I don't think this will be a defining moment for the Spartans. MSU matched UNH punch-for-punch for most of the night, drew even three separate times, and created looks late.
With a quick turnaround for game two, this could allow the Spartans to show us what they've got for this season.
