Fall in Michigan is about way more than just football on the weekends and pretty leaves—although those things rock—it's also about the smells.

The Smells We Love (and the Ones We Don’t)

Here's my very officially, totally scientific, not based in opinion at all, ranking of signature Michigan fall smells.

9. That "Mystery Smell" in the Garage

Is it a pile of damp grass and leaves? A pair of really old and stinky boots? A mouse nest in the corner? Who knows... but whatever it is, it's unfortunately part of fall's scent profile.

8. Wet Leaves

Wet leaves smell musty. Gross.

7. Damp Basement Smell

You swear that you cleaned the dehumidifier, but that smell is back, like it does every fall. Musty and kind of earthy.

6. Tractor Exhaust + Cornfields

If you grew up in or near farm country, you know this smell. Stinky for some and nostalgic for others.

5. Football Games

They smell a little like sweat, but mostly like hotdogs, popcorn, and victory.

4. Pumpkin Spice

From lattes to candles to muffins, pumpkin spice is everywhere—love it or hate it.

3. Fresh, Crunchy Leaves

There are few things better than the smell of freshly fallen leaves. Perfectly fall and crispy.

2. Bonfires

That perfect combination of that woodsy, smoky smell mixed with the sweet smells of roasting marshmallows and melting chocolate for s'mores. The only downside is that your hair smells like that for three days after.

1. Apple Cider + Donuts

NOTHING is more Pure Michigan than fresh cider and donuts in the fall. That tart apple mixes beautifully with the sugar and cinnamon smells from donuts.
